Mercury-laced skin products being sold

SKIN whitening products laced with mercury are still being sold in some areas in Metro Manila despite a health ban, the EcoWaste Coalition said yesterday.

The waste and toxic watchdog group made the claim after it tested 20 mercury-loaded creams that it bought in Chinese drug stores and health and beauty shops in Makati, Manila and Quezon City from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1.

"Of the 20 mercury-loaded creams, 10 were among the 50 brands recalled by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) for exceeding the government regulatory limit of one ppm (part per million) for mercury in cosmetics," said Aileen Lucero, Safe Cosmetics campaigner of the EcoWaste.

"We call on the FDA to immediately recall the toxic products and punish recalcitrant importers, distributors and retailers to dissuade others from defying the law."

EcoWaste said FDA has yet to ban the other 10 brands that could put users’ health at risk.

EcoWaste also noted that there were traces of arsenic, cadmium and chromium in some of the samples.
