November was National Healthy Skin Month, and in my family this did not go unnoticed.
My son, Dr. Hank Clever, of First Capitol Dermatology, is on staff at SSM St. Joseph Medical Center. Hank reminded me that healthy skin is important, especially as we enter the dry, cold winter months.
The old riddle, "What's the largest organ? Skin!" is true. By size, your skin, with all its nerve endings, blood vessels and glands, is the body's largest organ system. It regulates body temperature, produces vitamin D when exposed to sunlight and protects us from the harsh outside world.
"Our skin is critical, yet because it's exposed to the environment it's often damaged," Hank says.
"First of all, skin takes a beating on a daily basis as we bump and scrape against things. A lot of injuries can be avoided by wearing proper protective equipment for various activities, such as gloves, knee and elbow pads, and protective clothing. Helmets are a must for sports involving wheels, both to protect the head from superficial injury and to prevent much more serious injuries.
