ENCINITAS: Burn survivor happy on his comeback trail
Derek Thomas rides snowboards and bikes, lifts weights with a trainer twice weekly and does yoga nightly. When the 20-year-old flashed a confident grin and flexed his right arm during a recent interview, a taut biceps muscle rippled underneath his skin.
His attitude is amazing. As a burn survivor, though, his skin is the problem, especially for his return to athletics. The scar tissue that covers 87 percent of his body is not as flexible as unblemished skin. The burned skin contracts. It is too thin. It can tear.
It has been more than 18 months since Thomas nearly burned to death in a car crash in the Sierra Nevada. Four people, including his girlfriend, died as a result of the crash, which happened near Bishop on Aug. 9, 2010.
Thomas spent more than 11 months in a Los Angeles burn hospital, the first four months in a medically induced coma to spare him from excruciating pain. Doctors there said he had just a 1 percent chance of survival.
