It's a vicious circle. The cold, crisp air of winter robs our skin of moisture and leaves us shivering. To warm up, we switch on the furnace, or car heater, or space heater, which blows out hot air, warming our surroundings, but further drying out our skin. At the end of a long day, we climb into a hot bath hoping to soothe away the day's tensions, but in so doing we wash away what little oil our skin had left. Before long, we end up with "alligator skin" — itchy, scaly, parched skin that is crying out for help.

"The reason we feel so dried out during the winter is because the humidity is gone," explained Natalie Semchyshyn, M.D., assistant professor of dermatology at Saint Louis University, division of Laser and Cosmetic Surgery.

"So putting moisture back into the air with a humidifier can really help."

Adding moisture directly to the skin through the use of body lotions and moisturizers is also helpful, but what to choose? Dozens of products call out from the skin care aisle, "Pick me! Pick me!", but which ones will work best. That's what we really want to know.
