Control is achieved by correct feeding and watering. You should avoid excessive feeding with high nitrogen or high potash fertilisers and apply a single feed in spring using a general, balanced fertiliser. Water the trees in dry periods and also do some light summer pruning. While the trees are still relatively small you could also spray their foliage with calcium nitrate (from Garden Direct, 0845 217 0788; www.gardendirect.co.uk), following the manufacturers’ instructions.

We have a lot of wood ash. I have been told that this is high in potash. If this is the case, should we apply the ash around the base of fruit trees in order to improve fruit quality?

Unlike ash from a coal fire, which has no garden use, the ash from wood does contain a small but very variable amount of potash, probably not enough to work noticeable miracles on your fruit trees, despite its age-old use for this purpose. Wood ash is also a source of lime and can be sprinkled on the soil in small quantities and forked into the top layer around the garden generally, but not around the roots of lime-hating plants such as heathers or rhododendrons.
