After cardiac arrest nearly kills 34-year-old mom, she urges others to 'Wear Red'
CASCADE TOWNSHIP -- Moments before a sudden cardiac arrest stopped her heart cold, Nicole Tilton looked like the last person who would have heart disease.
The 34-year-old mom was sitting in a recliner, doing paperwork for a school book sale. Earlier, she had gone to the gym for her daily workout and shopped for a birthday present for her daughter, Morghan, who was turning 6 the next day.
She had no history of heart disease -- until that moment.
"I started to gasp for breath, and my eyes started rolling back in my head," Tilton said. "My hands started curling up."
The cardiac arrest could have killed her, but it didn't, thanks to quick action by her husband and medical care from paramedics, doctors, nurses and health care workers.
And because she is alive to tell this story, Tilton is working to educate others about heart disease, the No.1 killer of women in the U.S.
On Friday, she will proudly wear a silky red shirt in honor of National Wear Red Day, the American Heart Association event raising awareness of women's risks for heart disease. She also is chairperson of the West Michigan Go Red for Women Luncheon , a heart association fundraiser that will be held Feb. 24 at Noto's Old World Italian Dining in Grand Rapids.
